Viewing Job Activity Data

The following topics explain Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server’s various grid views and how they can be used to monitor job activity.

About the Grid Views

Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server provides three main tools for viewing and tracking job activity:

  • Job Activity Grid—displays all current jobs in the system
  • Server Log Grid—displays job outcomes
  • Job Monitor Grid—displays a summary of current job activity

Job Activity Grid

The Job Activity Grid , which is displayed when Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server is launched, shows current job activity on the system. In the default view, each job of every job type is listed, along with its owner, priority, status, and the date requested.

The grid contents will depend on how you have customized the view using the options for removing columns and for filtering and sorting the data (see “Customizing Grid Views”).

Since the data is loaded at startup, the grid must be refreshed periodically while Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server is running if you want to view the most up-to-date information (see “Refreshing Grid Views”).

Server Log Grid

The Server Log Grid displays the outcomes of jobs that have been processed by the server. The All view shows all logged items; the Errors view shows only those jobs which have generated errors (see “Error Log” ).

By default, the Server Log Grid opens at startup as a docked window below the Job Activity Grid. You can drag it to a different position on the screen or close it by clicking the Event Log option on the View menu. You can also customize the view using the options for removing columns (see “Customizing Grid Views” ).

The view must be refreshed periodically to load the most up-to-date information (see “Refreshing Grid Views” ).

With the exception of entries for repeating jobs, the entries displayed in the grid can be cleared either manually or automatically. To clear the grid manually, right-click anywhere in the grid window and select Clear All from the shortcut menu. For information about Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server’s automatic log purging feature, see “The Purge Agent” .

Error Log

The Errors view of the Server Log Grid displays jobs that have generated errors. The Event Details column shows what kind of error occurred. Each job type controls the type of errors that may result during a run.

Multiple Error Logging

Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server’s error logging function is capable of identifying multiple errors from a single job run. The visual display of these errors in the grid will depend on how this function is implemented at a particular installation.

Error Notification

If a job type has been defined to send an e-mail alert whenever it hangs up during processing, then any error logged by the job type will trigger an e-mail alert.

For efficient monitoring and notification, Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server uses a Mail Agent to periodically collect the alerts and combine them into a single e-mail message to the specified mail recipient. The Mail Agent is configured as a repeating job type using the Job Type Preferences dialog box. For more information, see “The Mail Agent” .

Combined Logging for Repeating Jobs

Each job type that has been set up with the Repeating run-time parameter is displayed as a single-event entry on the Server Log Grid. This entry is logged as a Repeated Job Start and Stop event type. The following information is shown for a repeating job type:

  • The most recent job start date and time (Event Date column).
  • The date and time of the most recently completed run (Event Details column).
  • The number of times the job has run since the last Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server startup (Event Details column). Note: Suspending and re-queuing the job type has no effect on the count; the count is reset only at shutdown.

For more information on setting up a repeating job type, see “Run Parameters”.

Job Monitor Grid

The Job Monitor Grid displays a summary of current job activity. The data is organized by job type and, within each job type, by priority. The state of each job type is shown, along with subtotals and totals for the number of queued, running, and failed jobs.

The Job Monitor Grid opens when you select the Job Monitor command on the View menu or when you click the Job Monitor button on the Standard toolbar.

The view can be expanded and collapsed by clicking the plus and minus signs of the outline nodes. The column widths can be changed but not the order of the columns. You can refresh the data at specified intervals by turning on the automatic refresh feature (see “Refreshing Grid Views”).
